UAE Accessibility Standards

The UAE requires all public buildings and new constructions to comply with accessibility standards for persons with disabilities. These requirements are enforced through Dubai Building Code Chapter 11 and Abu Dhabi's Estidama requirements.

Accessible Routes

General Requirements

  • Continuous accessible path from parking to building entrance
  • Minimum clear width: 1200mm
  • Maximum cross slope: 1:50 (2%)
  • Firm, stable, non-slip surface
  • No obstacles below 2100mm height

Level Changes

  • Changes up to 6mm: Vertical allowed
  • 6-13mm: Beveled 1:2 slope
  • Over 13mm: Ramp required

  • Located nearest to accessible entrance
  • Maximum 50m travel to entrance
  • Surface: Firm, level, slip-resistant

Common Compliance Gaps

  • **Ramp gradient too steep**: Often designed at 1:10
  • **Missing handrail extensions**: 300mm beyond ramp ends
  • **Insufficient toilet dimensions**: Column placement issues
  • **Door thresholds**: Must not exceed 13mm
  • **Missing TGSIs**: At hazards and crossings
